Australian #9 Colonial Red Gum Burl -
KNIFE blanks Stabilized & Resin filled
Blanks size of approx. 42 X 32 x 130mm long
Blanks weight of appro. 190gr. each
These blanks were cut from some very old Red Gum Burls, purchased at a farm auction in the beginning of 2011.
For a more detailed story of how I got the burls, read here.
The wood is solid with small cracks found throughout the burl, these are not your normal cracks but small wood cell separation as the burl dries. These being so old have certainly developed a few extra but they are in fact more of a "feature" to the burled wood that a flaw. While this is correct for most of the burl wood of these species, part of these burls have a lot larger cracks and cell separations, making them very fragile to handle however, these are ideal for filling with resin (PR) and that is precisely what I've done here...!
Many other types of burls have these small cracks also, some a lot larger in fact...!
While the wood is extremely heavy and dense, it works beautifully and reaches a good finish quite easily.
NOTE: Blanks have one face waxed for colour enhancement, allowing the true colours to be visible...!
Thank you for visiting...!
