This was quite an unexpected surprise gift from a good friend from the NT (Northern Territory) that comes down every year for a visit, as his parents live in a town near by.  I remember that last years' visit, he mention something about a dry tree that he had access to cut, but being very short in storage room, he decided to leave it there and "chop" a bit at the time as he needs it.

He promised to bring me some, and this last visit in July 2010, he rocked at my door with 2 medium size logs of something that I could see that has been dried and dead for quite some time, but when I looked into the logs end, I could also see that it was a very dense and very colourful wood indeed.

When I asked him what was it, it said that he knows it as Black Wattle, and other name that he couldn't remember so I was curious because I have local Black Wattle and is totally different than this one.  A Google search has revealed that, this wood species is unique to the Northern Territory, commonly known as the Northern Black Wattle.

A further search to this trees exact location, and appearance, has revealed something interesting, and that was that, in my 6 years living in the NT, I have in fact seen these trees around but I didn't know what they were, nor I was involved with Australian trees species then, so it went mostly unnoticed but, when I searched a little more I also became aware of other name this species is known by and that is the Earleaf Acacia, name that I use on my list to avoid confusions with my local black Wattle.

I was so excited in seeing what this wood would look finished that I didn't take any pics of the logs before I started cutting and in no time I had it all cut into pen blanks, in straight and diagonal cuts.  Got a blank of each type and made the samples which I took pic from, the next day in sunlight.

I like this wood a lot and even though that is a distance of 3.000 km or so in between us, I will try my best to convince my friend to bring a lot more of it next trip.  Are you listening Mark...??? The wood works great and finishes very well also...!  All blanks are waxed for protection and colours enhancement and, unless otherwise stated that the wood is green, all blanks presented/listed are ready to be worked on...!

Well, at the time I'm putting this web-store together (June 2014), that is an update to this story, Mark did listen to me and in 2012 he drove down with his old Toyota Hilux ute and a fair size trailer towed behind that "old girl", loaded with what was left of that large tree and that was quite a lot of wood, mostly all the big parts/logs of the old tree, the only thing that was still standing after all this time, that he cut just before his departure to the trip South...!

You would ask, did he went all that way back home, with an empty trailer...??? in your dreams...! no sir., he took a trailer loaded with my local woods, a bit of this, a bit of that and all of a certain, the trailer was really heavy and was time to stop, a fair swap I would say, thanks Mark...!

I have to say that, I really enjoy working with this old tree wood, the colours are exquisite and its density is firm so, I hope you like it also...!

Thank you for visiting...!
