These blanks were processed from some trees that we salvaged from a large pile that was going to be burn later on.  The trees were part of a fence line in a property next door, the owner decided that they needed to come down so, he ripped them out of the ground with a bulldozer and pushed them into a pile in the middle of the small paddock, for a big burn out, when the season would allow.

I spotted this pile from the main road so, I went and saw the owner find out what he really wanted to do with it, that's when I was told that, it was going to be burn.  He also found hard to believe that the wood could be used for something, as far as he was concerned, Poplar is not even any good for firewood, his father planted those trees 30 years ago, so the trees were quite mature and large but, no good to him so, I was told that I could have as much as I wanted...!

We got a few trailers of it and stored most of it in our open paddock, the rest was taken home and undercover.  The wood that is out of the weather, looks pretty OK and solid but, the wood stored in the open paddock and exposed to the full weather, it ain't doing so well, the wood is soft and does soak a lot of water, in turn, the humidity get to it and the rotting is accelerated pretty fast, spoiling 50% of the wood so far however, that moisture also induce spalting so, there are a few nice spalted pieces that I already took home, some are already processed and others are now undercover and that will allow the wood to last much longer before it's too late...!

Some people say that Poplar is too soft to work with, and yes, the wood is soft but quite workable, I have made numerous large bowls and other pieces with this wood and, I don't have any problem working with it.  If the tools aren't sharp, the wood tends to father, as some Pines do but sanding, will take care of that in no time...!

All blanks are waxed in one face, for colour enhancement for the pictures, only...!
