Note: This Heartwood type wood is a very small percentage of the whole tree yield.
These trees are found all around this area, they are not a native from Australia but well-sourced trees for their shade and beauty when flowering.
The lower part of these trees when mature, start to grow burls all around the trunk, these grow as the tree grows,
These burls do not have the quality and the value of many Aussie burls, the burl eyes tend to open/crack as the wood dries, it becomes fairly soft but still very workable.
I have recently found a large amount of this burl that has been cut and left in the weather for many years, this allowed the burl to dry and get some spalting growing, making the wood a little darker.
The place where I found this Peppercorn tree burl, is a firewood processing plant-based not far from McLaren Vale, this firewood place is where most of the tree working companies around here take their logs for disposal free of charge and the plant owner cuts and splits it into firewood.
There has been a number of new tree species that I manage to buy/salvage from becoming firewood from this place so, a great source of woods for me now that I no longer can do the tree work myself.
I have written a story about this new firewood place that, I already got many tonnes of wood and many more will be purchased in the near future, I never seem to have too much wood...!
