This is the first time I list this wood species as pen blanks, of the many varieties of Casuarinas' growing in Australia, this one has been identified as having its own gene pool and therefore a species on its own, that was in fact the case with most of the Casuarinas that I collected from the local area, that are now called Rock-Oaks, I also discovered that, one of the biggest trees I cut as a Casuarina, is in fact a Rock-Oak, beautiful straight and long trunk of about 8 meters tall and about 20" wide, of which I cut into short logs (easier to handle) but, the lower section of the tree trunk, approx 6' I slabbed on site at 2" slabs, they all develop a big crack through the centre of the slabs but that, doesn't bother me, I never make table tops or any of that sort of furniture, simply too heavy for me to handle now so, it all endup being cut into small pieces but, if spindle blanks are required, I can always cut some from it but, more than likely, they endup as pen or knife blanks...!

A great wood to work with and finish, the grain, or should I say the "rays" are most typical of this type of the Oaks family, similar timbers part of my "timbers list" are the #49 Australian Casuarina,  #15 (Holly-Oak) and the #14 She/Bull-Oak, these are the more pronounced "rays" as wood grain but other offer similar effects but in a smaller scale.

Australian Casuarinas trees are commonly found around these areas, near main roads, as windbreaks around houses and sheds and also a privacy fences if the trees are trimmed short and bushy.

The wood is fairly dense and heavy, works and finishes very well, all blanks were waxed in one face, for colour enhancement for the pics, only...!

Thank you for visiting...!
