These are recent stabilised blanks from some of the most spalted burl I have.
There are multiple colours of dies, from blue, red, green, yellow, purple and clear. The packs are divided by colour, each pack of 4 blanks should have the same colour from deep to light.
To make selection a little easier, I will next give a list of the packs numbers and the colours they represent.
Red - packs 1 to 5
Green - packs 6 to 14
Blue - Packs 15 to 33
Purple - Packs 16 to 50
Clear/yellow - packs 51 to 61 (these include possibly other colours that did stabilise but not colour much therefore being difficult to distinguish)
These trees are found all around this area, they are not a native of Australia but a well-sourced tree for its shade and beauty when flowering.
The lower part of these trees when mature, start to grow burls all around the trunk, these grow as the tree grows,
These burls do not have the quality and the value of many Aussie burls, the burl eyes tend to open/crack as the wood dries, it becomes fairly soft but still very workable.
I have recently found a large amount of this burl that has been cut and left in the weather for many years, this allowed the burl to dry and get some spalting growing, making the wood a little darker.
The place where I found this Peppercorn tree burl, is a firewood processing plant based not far from McLaren Vale, this firewood place is where most of the tree working companies around here take their logs for disposal free of charge and the plant owner cuts and splits it into firewood.
There have been a number of new tree species that I manage to buy/salvage from becoming firewood from this place so, a great source of woods for me now that I no longer can do the tree work myself.
I have written a story about this new firewood place that, I already got many tonnes of wood and much more will be purchased in the near future, I never seem to have too much wood...!
These stories are written in a forum called IAP (International Association of Penturners) based in the USA, I'm an active member there and also a vendor, please see here for the stories.
The blanks were stabilized with Cactus Juice in its clear form.
